Abstract
Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system associated with T-cell mediated immune response against myelin sheath, as well as oxidative stress. Numbness, electric shock sensation and visual problems are some of its clinical symptoms. Currently there is no cure for the disease and the treatments available serve only to slow the progression of the disease and for symptom control. This chapter highlights the therapeutic relevance of nutraceuticals against both neurodegeneration and neuronal inflammation. Nutraceuticals such as phenolic acids, non-flavonoid polyphenols, flavonoid polyphenols, diterpenes, and organic sulfur compounds have all been shown to possess an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effect against multiple sclerosis. This chapter aims to deliver both the advantages and disadvantages of consuming these nutraceuticals for the hope of alleviating the progression of multiple sclerosis. © 2021 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
