The quality of life in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: The predictive role of psychological and underlying medical factors

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are of the most prevalent and critical health problems threatening the human life. This study aimed to evaluate the role of some medical and psychological variables on the quality of life in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Methods: This prospective study was conducted on 161 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery in Sina Hospital, Isfahan, Iran, from September 2012 to May 2014. The required data were collected using a checklist for medical information, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Data analysis was done using statistical descriptive and analytical methods (multiple regression, Pearson correlation, and univariate ANOVA tests) via SPSS software. Findings: In regression analysis, anxiety and depression, cigarette smoking, history of heart disease in immediate family, history of previous myocardial infarction, hypertension, and diabetes were the predictors of quality of life for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, anxiety and depression are of the predictors of the quality of life in patients after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This means that by increasing the depression and anxiety scores, the score of quality of life in patients decreased. © 2017, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS). All Rights Reserved.
