Abstract
Background: Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) reduces the mechanical resistance of bones, and this process gradually leads to osteoporosis. In women, osteoporosis and fractures are more common than men during pregnancy due to calcium and other minerals being removed from the bones and after menopause due to the decrease in estrogen secretion. The present study was conducted to investigate the risk factors of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Methods: Among women under 65 who visited Al-Zahra Hospital in Isfahan during 2017 and 2018 to check for BMD, the medical records of 384 people were examined. Necessary information using checklists that contain demographic information of patients including, age, height, weight, age of menopause, age of first menstruation, underlying diseases (hyperthyroidism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal failure, type 1 diabetes mellitus, primary hyperparathyroidism, prolactinoma), alcohol consumption, smoking, corticosteroid, levothyroxine, anticoagulants drugs use and reduced physical activity were collected. Findings: The findings of this research show that the T-Score of measuring the bone density of patients with the use of corticosteroids (-1.4071 ± 1.17), levothyroxine (-1.9441 ± 1.49), smoking (-1.6421 ± 0.3876) and underlying diseases (-1.4511 ± 1.2) had a significant relationship in reducing bone density (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Since BMD reduction can lead to morbidity and mortality, especially in people with long-term use of corticosteroids, levothyroxine, smoking, as well as underlying diseases, lack of proper physical activity (50), old age, and women who experience frequent pregnancies, need special attention, regarding BMD monitoring and timely treatment. © 2024 Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
