Abstract
Developing drugs with low side effects in cancer therapy has been recently considered. Therefore, we investigated the impact of Spirulina-purified C-phycocyanin, which has the highest purity index of 28.8 and was patented in the World Intellectual Property Organization, on immune boosting. C-phycocyanin cell toxicity and proliferation effects (1,10,100, 250 µg/mL) were assayed. The flow cytometry confirmed that C-phycocyanin increased proliferation and decreased necrosis by 50 with no toxicity. Molecular docking revealed that the C-phycocyanin interacts with novel key cancer-related proteins in the apoptosis pathway, including CASPASE3, COX-2, JAK3, NFκB, and STAT3, with the lowest binding affinity (from -132.06 to -179.19 kcal/mol) and total energy (from -382.4 to -504.8 kcal/mol). Therefore, it can be concluded that C-phycocyanin might be an effective candidate as a biopharmaceutical in drug and prodrug design for cancer treatment and immune boosting.
