Abstract
Background: Platelet transfusion is used in patients with a critical condition, and in some cases in the intensive care unit (ICU) to prevent thrombocytopenia. The aim of this study was to evaluate platelet elevation following injection of a platelet unit in patients admitted to intensive care unit. Methods: In this retrospective study, 130 patients who received a unit of platelet in the intensive care units of Alzahra hospital, Isfahan, Iran, were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. Patients’ information were recorded in the checklist, and the rate of platelet elevation in patients within 7 days of admission was compared with the data obtained. Findings: The mean elevation of platelet count in patients was 31.16 ± 10.35 × 103/µl. There was a reverse significant correlation between the elevation of platelet count with the duration of hospitalization in intensive care unit and the number of blood sampling times (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Platelet transfusion in patients admitted to intensive care unit may cause short duration of hospitalization; in addition, increase in the number of blood sampling times leads to a decrease in platelet count in these patients. © 2018, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
