Abstract

In this chapter, in addition to information on the synthetic method of some types of bisphenols, we provided an overview of the adverse effects of these chemicals on some risk factors of non-communicable diseases in children and adolescents. We reviewed some synthetic methods regarding the synthesis of 18 types of bisphenols including bisphenol A, bisphenol F, and bisphenol S. Over the past decades, different methods for the synthesis of bisphenols were developed using homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems. These compounds are important chemical and industrial materials for different usage. In recent years, the use of bisphenolic compounds in plastic, resins, plasticizers, medical products, and food packaging has dramatically increased. Therefore, these compounds could be disseminated to the world environment. Bisphenols are known as one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals with adverse health effects from early life. This chapter is categorized into two main parts; part (I): synthesis of different bisphenols and part (II): association between bisphenols and cardiometabolic risk factors in the pediatric age group. The findings of this chapter underscore the importance of reducing the use and exposure to bisphenols for implementing programs aiming at primordial prevention of noncommunicable diseases. © 2020 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
