Abstract
Background: Previous studies had shown that patients with breast cancer have a high level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). But there was not any study about the role of prostate-specific antigen in detection of breast cancer. So, this study was done to determine the diagnostic values of prostate-specific antigen in detection of breast masses nature. Methods: In a cross sectional study, 100 patients with breast mass candidate for biopsy were selected and serum level of total serum prostate-specific antigen was measured. Then, patients underwent biopsy and diagnostic values were calculated for it in comparison with pathology results. Findings: The cut point of prostate-specific antigen for detection of breast mass nature was 0.21 ng/dl and according to it, sensitivity and specificity of prostate-specific antigen was 88.5 and 98.6 percent, respectively. False negative and positive was 1.4 and 11.5 percent, respectively. In addition, positive and negative predictive values were 95.8 and 96.1 percent, respectively, and accuracy rate of prostate-specific antigen was 96 percent. Conclusion: According to our findings, prostate-specific antigen have a high diagnostic value for detection of breast mass nature and it can be used as a serum biomarker to detect the nature of breast mass, especially in early stages. © 2017, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
