Grandparent-Grandchild Relationship and Its Association with Subjective Well-Being in Older Adults - Isfahan, Iran

Abstract

Objectives: Retirement, unemployment, loneliness, lack of social support, the nuclearization of families, and societal industrialization pose significant threats to the subjective well-being (SWB) of older adults. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between grandparent-grandchild interactions (GGR) and subjective well-being (SWB) among older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a sample of 415 older adults. Data were collected using a GGR questionnaire alongside instruments assessing three dimensions of SWB: life satisfaction, positive and negative emotions, and loneliness. Results: The mean score for GGR was 49.32 f 8.78. The mean scores for emotional loneliness, social loneliness, positive emotions, negative emotions, and life satisfaction were 7.98 f 1.71, 4.98 f 2.04, 30.07 f 5.84, 18.35 f 4.87, and 24.47 f 3.62, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between the total GGR score and emotional loneliness, positive emotions, and life satisfaction (P < 0.01). Conversely, a significant negative correlation existed between the total GGR score and social loneliness as well as negative emotions (P < 0.05). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between the overall SWB score, its emotional dimension, and educational attainment (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that GGR enhances positive aspects of SWB while mitigating its negative aspects. This study highlights the necessity for healthcare policies that prioritize SWB and mental health interventions for older adults, particularly those living without children or grandchildren.
