Investigating the Diagnostic Effect of Platelet Distribution Width /Lymphocyte Ratio on the Prognosis of Breast and Prostate Cancer Patients

Abstract

Background Breast and prostate cancer are among the most common malignancies, and their early detection plays an important role in disease control and reducing complications. PDW/Lymphocyte ratio as an inflammatory index may change in patients with cancer, but the results of previous studies in this field have been contradictory. This case-control study was conducted to investigate the diagnostic value of this ratio in patients with breast cancer and compare it with prostate cancer. Methods: The study was conducted on 111 breast cancer patients, 38 prostate cancer patients, and healthy control groups. Findings: The results showed that the mean PDW/Lymphocyte ratio in cancer patients was significantly higher than that in healthy individuals. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.84 in breast cancer and 0.8 in prostate cancer, indicating similar diagnostic power of this index in both diseases. Conclusion: Overall, the PDW/Lymphocyte ratio can be used as an auxiliary tool in the early diagnosis and follow-up of breast and prostate cancer progression. © 2026, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
