Abstract

Background: Primary angioplasty is an emergency intervention procedure which restores blood flow in an infarcted artery in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) with ST-segment elevation. Many studies showed, opium addiction (OA) can be a risk factor for MI. However no studies showed the role of OA in chest pain response after primary angioplasty. In this study we aimed to compare the chest pain response after primary angioplasty in OA and non-OA group. Methods: The present study is a case control study. The study population consisted of 180 male patients (90 addicted patients and 90 non-addicted patients) who were admitted to the emergency department of Khorshid Hospital in Isfahan with a diagnosis of acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction and candidate for primary angioplasty. The required information was collected using a chest pain severity record before and after the primary angioplasty. Findings: The mean chest pain intensity after the primary angioplasty was assessed in the two groups and no significant difference was observed. In terms of substance use, the highest frequency was related to opium, which was 86.3. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the type of myocardial infarction and in both groups, the highest frequency was related to the anterior level. Conclusion: The reduction in mean chest pain intensity after primary angioplasty did not show a significant difference between the two groups of male patients with acute myocardial infarction: those opium addicted and those not addicted. © 2026, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
