Abstract

Introduction Wound management is a crucial component of healthcare, particularly in urologic patients, where surgical wounds and pressure ulcers represent significant clinical challenges. Enhancing nurses’ awareness and abilities in wound management can lead to more acceptable patient outcomes and reduced complications. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of an educational program on improving the wound management competencies of nursing staff at Al-Zahra Medical and Educational Hospital. Methods A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted between April 2023 and February 2024 among 83 nurses, including 45 educational liaisons and 38 patient education liaisons. Participants attended theoretical and practical training sessions delivered by the hospital wound team. Data were collected using theoretical tests and practical assessment tests before and after the intervention. Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses were applied to evaluate changes in performance between the two groups. Results Post-test scores indicated significant improvements in both groups. The total average score rose from 50 to 68 among educational liaisons and from 47 to 61 among patient education liaisons. In the post-test, 48.1 of participants achieved scores above 70 in theoretical assessments, while 51.8 scored above 70 in practical assessments. Furthermore, 68.6 and 80.7 of participants achieved scores above 46 in theoretical and practical assessments, respectively. Educational liaisons showed higher theoretical performance, whereas patient education liaisons exhibited stronger practical skills. Conclusions The findings indicate that targeted educational programs can significantly enhance nurses’ competencies in the wound management of urologic patients. Continuous professional development, emphasizing practical and action-based learning, is essential for sustaining and advancing these improvements. Strengthening educational programs, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and adopting new technologies can further advance wound care quality and patient outcomes.
