Abstract

Background: Migraine is a common headache disorder, and patients with migraine commonly report vestibular symptoms. Although the relation between vestibular migraine and vestibular symptoms were investigated in many studies, the prevalence of vestibular symptoms in migraine patients without vestibular migraine type are less taken into consideration. Therefore, in this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of vestibular symptoms in patients with migraine in Isfahan, Iran. Methods: In a descriptive-analytic study, 400 patients with migraine were selected by convenience sampling. To determine the prevalence of vestibular symptoms in patients with migraine, a questionnaire consisting of 25 questions with 9 criteria was used. Findings: No significant differences were observed between patients with migraine with aura and patients with migraine without aura regarding to the symptoms including: sensation of spinning (P = 0.03), ataxia (P = 0.01) and a feeling of pressure in the head (P < 0.01). The most prevalent vestibular symptoms were nausea (78), lightheadedness (74.5), and phonophobia (72.3), respectively. Conclusion: Vestibular symptoms had a high prevalence among patients with migraine suggesting that maybe there is an association between these symptoms and pathophysiology of migraine. There was significant difference between the two groups of patients with migraine with aura and migraine without aura in terms of prevalence of vestibular symptoms that can be used diagnostically to differentiate between two these groups of patients. 2016, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
