Abstract

Introduction: Percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy (PDT) is suggested as a method to perform an elective tracheostomy. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency distribution of short-term complications of tracheostomy through the lid in contrast to tracheostomy tracheostomy (ST) in Alzahra hospital in Isfahan (Iran). Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial study, 40 patients were divided randomly into two groups of 20 patiencts: PDT, and surgical tracheostomy (ST). Patients were matched for age, sex, duration of surgery and intraoperative bleeding, length neck, cost, short-term complications. Results: Duration of operation and length of the neck in the PDT group was significantly less than ST (5.05 vs 14.2 min, P <0.05). The significant difference in neck length was observed in PDT (6cm) vs ST (6.65 cm) (P = 0.008). In terms of postoperative complications between the two groups, only a stoma site infection was observed within five days after surgery in the in ST group. Conclusion: In patients with elective tracheotomy PDT than ST is the preferred method and even in the patients with short neck PDT can be used. © 2018, Semnan University of Medical Sciences.
